Mini Inclusive Rainbow Pride Flag | Free Crochet Pattern
Mini Inclusive Rainbow Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern – Beginner Friendly
This mini rainbow Pride flag pattern is the third of fifteen flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. The first four flags will be the four most common iterations of the rainbow flag. The first was the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow and today will be the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag which adds a black and brown stripe to the six stripe rainbow.
Flown for the first time in 2017 in Philadelphia as part of the city’s More Color More Pride campaign, the inclusive rainbow Pride flag was intended to address the city’s racial discrimination problem in gay bars. The flag has had some controversy around it initially, some saying the original 6-stripe flag was already inclusive and the addition of stripes based off skin color was offensive and not on brand with the original flag’s mood. But many others say the black and brown stripes are vital, since racial injustice is alive and well in the LGBTQ+ community. Fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color. Black Lives Matter, and have mattered, and the LGBTQ+ community has a long way to go in acknowledging and standing with people of color. The addition of the black and brown stripes is a start in acknowledging the problem and committing to fixing it. But don’t forget – it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and just changing your rainbow flag to include black and brown stripes isn’t enough without thoughtful and enduring action behind it.

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Brown & Black (I used mostly Red Heart Super Saver Solids)
COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE
Flag size is approximately 3.5 x 5.25 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 9 rows of 10 stitches.
NOTES
This pattern uses only single crochet and is worked in rows from the bottom up. It calls for a single crochet chainless foundation row only because it is how I made my samples. The pattern is not adjusted for the slightly larger foundation row, meaning your stripes may not be perfectly even. If your preferred beginning method is a chain, substitute this for Row 1: ch 25, turn, sc 24 across beginning in second chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)
LET’S CROCHET!
Row 1: (purple) Foundation sc 24, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 2: (purple) Sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]

Row 5-6: (green) sc 24 across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
