Mini Genderqueer Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern

This genderqueer pride flag pattern is the sixth of fifteen flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Earlier flags included the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow , then the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag and the Pride Progress flag. Today marks the second of the gender identity flags on my list, the first was the transgender pride flag. But before diving into the flag, a little info on gender identity.

Gender identity is one’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. Genderqueer people typically reject notions of static categories of gender and embrace a fluidity of gender identity. People who identify as “genderqueer” may see themselves as being both male and female, neither male nor female or as falling completely outside these categories.

These definitions were sourced from Human Rights Campaign. If you’re not sure how to be an ally to genderqueer folx, learn more with this article from The Trevor Project. or this this FAQ from Genderqueer and Non-binary Identities.

The genderqueer pride flag was created in 2010 by Marilyn Roxie, genderqueer writer, musician, and digital media designer, when they were twenty years old. The flag went through a few different designs along with some color adjustments before it became the final version in 2012. Along with the flag, Roxie created the website genderqueerid.com which is my source for this info and a helpful resource if you want to know more about genderqueer and non-binary identities.

The genderqueer pride flag features three horizontal stripes in three colors – dark green, lavender and white. The lavender represents a mixture of blue & pink of the transgender pride flag and is meant to represent androgyny. Lavender is also a color historically associated with queer culture. The white represents gender neutrality, similar to the transgender flag. The dark green is the opposite color of the lavender stripe, representing identities outside of or without reference to the gender binary.

The three colors are not meant to indicate that any of these identities are entirely separate or opposites of one another conceptually; they are all interrelated as well as key concepts in their own right, and there are more concepts and variation of gender and sexuality present that tie into genderqueer identities than can be listed here. The purpose of the flag is to help create visibility for the genderqueer community and related identities.

-Marilyn Roxie

Non-binary was added to the name of the genderqueer flag in 2013. Then in 2014, a different four stripe non-binary pride flag was introduced. Since then, Marilyn Roxie has written that they are fine with the lavender, green and white flag being commonly known as just the genderqueer flag.  They write about the differences and similarities between non-binary and genderqueer on GenderqueerID.com.

Genderqueer and non-binary have almost complete overlap in the identities they refer to, which I have written about previously, however ‘queer’ has political and theoretical, even confrontational, connotations. I personally love and embrace those connotations, but they are ones that not everyone wants or understands. I have even found it easier to explain my identity to cisgender people by using the term ‘non-binary’ myself than I ever did using the term genderqueer. Identity can be complex and easy isn’t always what we want or need though, is it? I love being queer, and will be, forever.

Crochet genderqueer pride flag on a white background

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: Green, white and purple.

COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE
Flag size is approximately 3.5 x 5.25 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 9 rows of 10 stitches.

NOTES
This pattern uses only single crochet and is worked in rows from the bottom up. It calls for a single crochet chainless foundation row only because it is how I made my samples. The pattern is not adjusted for the slightly larger foundation row, meaning your stripes may not be perfectly even. If your preferred beginning method is a chain, substitute this for Row 1: ch 25, turn, sc 24 across beginning in second chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)

LET’S CROCHET!
Row 1: (green) Foundation sc 24, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 2-5: (green) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 6-10: (white) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 11-15: (purple) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Finish and fasten off. Weave in ends.
