Last summer we made a stop on the road to Ohio to visit the abandoned asylum Indianapolis is housing. One of many, from what I can tell. This asylum, known as Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane, was a large complex spanning 160 acres. It was open for 150 years ‘treating’ mentally ill patients. It was closed in 1994 after allegations of patient abuse. Ugh.

Today, some of the old buildings still stand. One now houses the Indiana Medical History Museum, which we weren’t able to visit because we were there late in the day. Another of the buildings was converted into student apartments, which honestly is a little creepy.

The oldest building that still stands on the property is the one we photographed. It is the power house, built in 1886. I did not attempt to go inside as the property was obviously being tended. There were for sale signs around and the windows were painted with some strange murals. We could have gotten inside the back, as you’ll see below. If you visit and this site is still accessible, I do not advise going inside.

Next door to the power house was the old laundry building, built in 1894. We didn’t walk around outside of it because there was active construction.
