How To Make Jello Shots That Aren’t Terrible
When my girlfriend said she likes to make jello shots, I immediately had a flashback to parties in my early 20’s, gagging on what tasted like vodka-flavored jello and smiling through gritted teeth as I asked for another. But Jamie convinced me her jello shots were okay so I begrudgingly agreed to try them.
I should have never doubted her, because they were amazing.
It turns out there’s a reason why the jello shots of my college days still make me cringe and Jamie’s jello shots are like tiny, delicious liquor-filled treats. They have less alcohol and a lot more flavor. Which is nice because you can have them while still drinking the evening’s mixed drink and not feel like you’re drinking yourself into oblivion. It’s really a win-win.
Standard jello shot recipe is jello, one cup water and one cup liquor. Here is Jamie’s modified recipe.
Recipe For Jello Shots That Don’t Suck
1 package jello
1 cup water
1/2 cup liquor (1 type or multiple)
1/2 cup juice, soda or mixer
1. Bring water to boil. Add jello package. Mix.
2. Add liquor and juice/mixer to jello mix.
3. Pour into tiny cups.
4. Refrigerate 2-5 hours until set.
For example, the first ones I tried were Fuzzy Navel inspired shots – orange jello, peach vodka and orange juice. Any combination of alcohol and mixer, added to a complimentary jello flavor, will result in a good jello shot.
