Mini Genderfluid Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern

This Genderfluid pride flag pattern is the eighth of fifteen flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. I started with rainbow flags: the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow , then the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag and the Pride Progress flag. Now we’ve moved into gender identity flags:  the Transgender pride flag, the Genderqueer pride flag and the Non-Binary pride flag so far. But before diving into today’s Genderfluid flag, a little info on gender identity.

Gender identity is one’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of Genderfluid is of or relating to a person having or expressing a fluid or unfixed gender identity. This could mean a Genderfluid person could identify as a man at one time, a woman at another, or both, or neither, or something else and genderfluidity gives room for this to fluxuate. Genderfluid is considered to be under the non-binary umbrella, although not all Genderfluid folx identify as non-binary.

The Genderfluid pride flag was created in 2012 by then twenty-year-old JJ Poole. They did not identify as much with genderqueer flag which was the only gender identity flag at the time, so they created something different. The flag was submitted to a popular Tumblr about genderfluidity and the flag took off. The colors of the stripes represent as expected – blue for masculinity, pink for femininity, purple for both, white for all genders, black for lack of gender.

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: Blue, purple, pink, black and white.

COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE
Flag size is approximately 3.25 x 5.25 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 9 rows of 10 stitches.

NOTES
This pattern uses only single crochet and is worked in rows from the bottom up. It calls for a single crochet chainless foundation row only because it is how I made my samples. The pattern is not adjusted for the slightly larger foundation row, meaning your stripes may not be perfectly even. If your preferred beginning method is a chain, substitute this for Row 1: ch 25, turn, sc 24 across beginning in second chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)

LET’S CROCHET!
Row 1: (blue) chainless foundation sc 24, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 2-3: (blue) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 4-6: (black) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 7-9: (purple) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 10-12: (white) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 13-15: (pink) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Finish and fasten off. Weave in ends.
