Non-Binary Pride Flag | Free Crochet Pattern
Mini Non-Binary Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern
This Non-Binary pride flag pattern is the seventh of fifteen flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. I started with rainbow flags: the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow , then the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag and the Pride Progress flag. Now we’ve moved into gender identity flags: the Transgender pride flag. and the Genderqueer pride flag so far. But before diving into the flag, a little info on gender identity.
Gender identity is one’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. Non-Binary is an adjective describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary people may identify as being both a man and a woman, somewhere in between, or as falling completely outside these categories. While many also identify as transgender, not all non-binary people do.
These definitions were sourced from Human Rights Campaign. If you’re not sure how to be an ally to gender non-conforming folx, learn more with this article from The Trevor Project. or this this FAQ about Genderqueer and Non-binary Identities.
If you read about the genderqueer flag, you’ll know the lavender, white and green striped flag was created in 2011. Although there is overlap between non-binary and genderqueer identities, and intent by the creator for that flag to represent genderqueer AND non-binary identities, some folx thought the genderqueer flag did not represent them. In 2014, 17-year-old Kye Roman created the Non-Binary flag we fly today – four horizontal stripes of black, purple, white and yellow.
As with all the Pride flags so far, each colored stripe represents a facet of the identity being represented. Yellow represents genders outside the binary. White represents identities with multiple and/or all genders. Purple, as with the genderqueer flag, represents a mix of female and male (purple being the mix of blue and pink), and also represents fluidity and uniqueness in non-binary individuals. Black represents those who feel they lack gender or have no gender.

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: Black, white, purple and yellow. (I used mostly Red Heart Super Saver)
COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE
Flag size is approximately 3.5 x 5.25 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 9 rows of 10 stitches.
NOTES
This pattern uses only single crochet and is worked in rows from the bottom up. It calls for a single crochet chainless foundation row only because it is how I made my samples. The pattern is not adjusted for the slightly larger foundation row, meaning your stripes may not be perfectly even. If your preferred beginning method is a chain, substitute this for Row 1: ch 25, turn, sc 24 across beginning in second chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)
LET’S CROCHET!
Row 1: (black) Foundation sc 24, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 2-4: (black) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 5-8: (purple) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 9-12: (white) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 13-16: (yellow) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Finish and fasten off. Weave in ends.
