Mini Demisexual Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern

This demisexual pride flag pattern is 12 of 15 flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. I started with rainbow flags: the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow , then the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag and the Pride Progress flag. Then we moved into a few gender identity flags: the Transgender pride flag, the Genderqueer pride flag, the Non-Binary pride flag and the Genderfluid pride flag. Now we are moving into sexual & romantic orientation flags, starting with the bisexual pride flag first, then the pansexual pride flag, the polysexual pride flag and the demisexual pride flag today.

Sexual orientation, according to the Human Rights Campaign, is an inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people. For many people, this definition works; their sexual, romantic and emotional orientations are all in line with each other. For others, sexual orientation and romantic orientation are different from one another. I have included a few romantic orientation pride flags in this list because that aspect of the LGBTQ+ spectrum was something I didn’t know anything about until very recently, so I think it’s important to include. I am no expert on this subject, I am doing research and learning as I go, so if I have made any mistakes in this or any other explanation, please let me know. Also any info here is a just the very tip of the iceberg; I encourage you to keep reading and learning.

Demisexuality is a sexual orientation in which someone feels sexual attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond. This necessary emotional bond can be different things for different people. This doesn’t mean a demisexual person is sexually attracted to everyone they have a bond with, just that the bond needs to be there prior to feelings of sexual attraction. Some folx include demisexuality under the asexual umbrella but others don’t. Some who identify as demisexual may also identify as gray ace/asexual, which is sexual attraction only under certain circumstances. Some demisexual folx may also have a gender-specific sexual orientation (lesbian, bisexual, polysexual, etc.) This is a very brief description of demisexuality, and as with other identities, everyone is different, so be sure not to assume how a person interprets their sexual identity.

I couldn’t find information on the creator of the demisexual pride flag or much about its looks, only information on the colors. The colors are mostly the same as the asexual flag, black for asexuality, grey for grey asexuality, and purple for community. In the asexual flag, the white stands for non-asexual partners and allies, but in the demisexual flag, the white stands for sexuality. I was unable to find any information about the look of the stripes or triangle on the flag. If anyone has additional info let me know.

Crochet demisexual flag on a white background

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: White, gray, black and purple. (I used mostly Red Heart Super Saver Solids)

COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE: Flag size is approximately 3.25 x 5 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 10 rows of 9 stitches.

This project uses tapestry crochet techniques. Because of the design, there’s no need to carry any colors, I dropped each color during color changes. There is a color change in the first row, which I was able to accomplish with the foundation crochet, doing a color change by pulling the next color through on the stitch before the same as I would do a traditional color change. If you have any questions about this feel free to reach out.

Graph chart of the Demisexual Pride Flag

If following written directions is better for you than follow a chart, here are all the color changes listed per row. The number of sc stitches of each color is listed in parenthesis. Each row will be 24 sc across. For my sample I did a chain 1 at the end of the row before turning and I did not count that as a stitch.

Row 1 – gray (23), black (1)
Row 2 – black (2), gray (22)
Row 3 – gray (21), black (3)
Row 4 – black (4), gray (20)
Row 5 – gray (19), black (5)
Row 6 – black (6), gray (18)
Row 7 – purple (17), black (7)
Row 8 – black (8), purple (16)
Row 9 – purple (17), black (7)
Row 10 – black (6), white (18)
Row 11 – white (19), black (5)
Row 12 – black (4), white (20)
Row 13 – white (21), black (3)
