Mini Polysexual Pride Flag Free Crochet Pattern

This polysexual pride flag pattern is the eleventh of fifteen flags celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. I started with rainbow flags: the original 1978 version, followed by the six stripe rainbow , then the 2017 inclusive rainbow flag and the Pride Progress flag. Then we moved into a few gender identity flags: the Transgender pride flag, the Genderqueer pride flag, the Non-Binary pride flag and the Genderfluid pride flag. Now we are moving into sexual & romantic orientation flags, starting with the bisexual pride flag first, then the pansexual pride flag and now the polysexual pride flag.

Sexual orientation, according to the Human Rights Campaign, is an inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people. For many people, this definition works; their sexual, romantic and emotional orientations are all in line with each other. For others, sexual orientation and romantic orientation are different from one another. I have included a few romantic orientation pride flags in this list because that aspect of the LGBTQ+ spectrum was something I didn’t know anything about until very recently, so I think it’s important to include. I am no expert on this subject, I am doing research and learning as I go, so if I have made any mistakes in this or any other explanation, please let me know. Also any info here is a just the very tip of the iceberg; I encourage you to keep reading and learning.

A polysexual person is someone attracted to multiple, but not necessarily all, genders. This is different from pansexual, attraction to all genders, and bisexual, attraction to both male and female genders or to their own gender and other genders depending on the definition. Polysexuality is not the same as polyamory, defined on Wikipedia as consensual, ethical and responsible non-monogamy.  As with other identities, everyone is different, so be sure to not assume how a person interprets their sexual identity.

So first off, for a sexual identity that’s been named for a hundred years, I definitely did not know the details of polysexuality. (She’s learning.) Polysexual describes attraction to multiple, but not necessarily all, genders. For instance, someone who is attracted to men and non-binary folx but not women might identify as polysexual.

As is the case with many flags, the polysexual flag was first published online.  It was posted on a Tumblr about polysexuality by a user named Samlin. They also wrote the following:

“I, as a poly individual, was greatly saddened that we don’t have a flag…so I made one 😛 I made it similar to the bi and pan flags, since they’re all in under the multisexual umbrella -Samlin”.

The stripes on the flag represent attraction to different genders, pink representing female identities, blue representing male identities and the green representing genders outside the binary.

SUPPLIES
3.75mm (F) hook
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
4 medium worsted weight yarn, a small amount in the following colors: Blue, green, pink. (I used mostly Red Heart Super Saver)

COMPLETED PROJECT SIZE/GAUGE
Flag size is approximately 3.25 x 5 inches. My gauge: 2 x 2 inch square = 9 rows of 10 stitches.

NOTES
This pattern uses only single crochet and is worked in rows from the bottom up. It calls for a single crochet chainless foundation row only because it is how I made my samples. The pattern is not adjusted for the slightly larger foundation row, meaning your stripes may not be perfectly even. If your preferred beginning method is a chain, substitute this for Row 1: ch 25, turn, sc 24 across beginning in second chain from hook, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)

LET’S CROCHET!
Row 1: (blue) Foundation sc 24, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 2-5: (blue) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 6-10: (green) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Row 11-15: (pink) sc 24 st across, ch 1, turn [24 st]
Finish and fasten off. Weave in ends
